What is the best dry shampoo for oily hair? Find out in my review below! Also check out how to use dry shampoo for oily hair.
According to our medical reviewer Dr Adeela Anees, a dry shampoo (if used correctly) is a good alternative to shampooing if you want to control greasiness in the scalp and are pressed for time.
Dr Aneesa says that “First of all you need to look at the formula. While a spray or liquid-based dry shampoo would be great for moisturizing dry hair or adding pigment to color-treated hair, powder dry shampoos suit oily hair the best. The powder is great at absorbing greasiness from the scalp.”
So here are my reviews of good dry shampoos for oily hair.
Here are some dry shampoos for oily hair at a glance!

Top Dry Shampoo for Oily Hair 2023
IGK Hair First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

If your hair gets too oily, too quick, then trying this IGK Charcoal Detox dry shampoo is a good idea. Its name gives you a hint of its superpower!
This shampoo thoroughly cleanses, refreshes, and detoxifies your oily roots.
Charcoal poweder, known for its clarifying properties, is the major ingredient here, along with white tea powder that is gentle on sensitive or irritated scalps.
According to Dr Anees, “There are certain ingredients in the dry shampoo that are better at absorbing oiliness. Components such as activated charcoal, tapioca starch, rice powder, etc. are excellent at removing grease and dirt from the scalp. So look out for these.”
There are also studies published in Clinics in dermatology vol. 38,2 (2020) that prove that “charcoal is generally safe” for use.
Since it contains such a powerful detoxifying formula and yet is super-mild on the skin, you can use it for days in a row.
Still not convinced? The white tea formulation strengthens the hair follicles, protecting hair against breakage and hair loss.
Pros:
- It contains charcoal powder that is excellent at reducing greasiness
- White tea extracts in the formula nourish hair follicles and detoxify scalp skin
- Doesn’t leave any sort of flakiness or white residue on hair
Cons:
- The shampoo is a bit pricey
My Ratings:
- Ability To Reduce Greasiness – 5/5
- Non-Flakiness – 4.5/5
- Ingredients & Formula – 5/5
- Price – 4/5
Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk

The common problem with dry shampoos is that they don’t absorb the greasiness enough, or they dry out your hair too much.
The Klorane dry shampoo finds the perfect goldilocks balance. It’s a cult favorite and has got rave reviews.
It contains oat milk that moisturizes your scalp and soothes any irritation.
There’s also microspheres, silica, and rice and corn starch that help in absorbing the excess oil and dirt.
My favorite part however is that the formulation is dermatologically-tested, vegan, and contains no parabens, sulfates, or silicones.
So, if you have a sensitive scalp, this herbal product is the one for you.
I really liked how the formula was so easily absorbed by my hair. The powder formula went through my thick tresses very easily.
Is this shampoo perfect? Nope. It has a fantastic formula and it’s very effective. So naturally it’s very expensive.

But my biggest disappointment is that the product has very little quantity. It’s definitely for everyday use unless you want to break your budget.
If your main concern is simply oily hair and your scalp’s not very sensitive, you can go for drugstore products like Tressemme or Dove.
If you have an inflamed scalp then trust me this dry shampoo might be worth the price.
Pros:
- The shampoo is non-aerosol so it’s good for the environment
- The formula is vegan and contains mostly natural ingredients
- The corn starch and rice starch formula help remove grease easily
- There’s oat milk in here that nourishes hair and doesn’t make it frizzy or too dry
Cons:
- Very expensive and little quantity for the price
- The powder formula might show on very dark hair
My Ratings:
- Ability To Reduce Greasiness – 4.5/5
- Non-Flakiness – 3.5
- Ingredients & Formula – 5/5
- Price – 3.5/5
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

Out of all the shampoos I’ve reviewed here, I do think that the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day dry shampoo is among the top 3 at least of the best dry shampoo for oily hair.
My hair really loves it! I did a bit of research into the product and found that the secret to the effectiveness of this shampoo lies in its patented Healthy Hair Molecule (OFPMA) formula.
It absorbs excess oil, dirt, and odor from the scalp in between washes, and leaves my hair soft, straight and smooth.
My favorite part? It also adds this amazing shine to my hair. And I don’t have to worry about chalky residue either!

Plus, this cleanser doesn’t contain sulfates, phthalates, parabens, silicones, or anything that would compromise hair health.
So in a nutshell, if you have dark hair ad are worried about whitish residue showing up or have a sensitive scalp, this one is for you.
Now coming to the downside. I did feel that this dry shampoo is a bit on the expensive side. The price is less than Klorane shampoo for same quantity but definitely more than Batiste or Dove.
Pros:
- The formula is color safe and free of silicones, parabens and phthalates
- The dry shampoo won’t leave a white cast so it can be used on dark hair
Cons:
- Expensive
My Ratings:
- Ability To Reduce Greasiness – 4.5/5
- Non-Flakiness – 5/5
- Ingredients & Formula – 5/5
- Price – 4/5
TRESemmé Dry Shampoo Between Washes Fresh & Clean

I was looking for a dry shampoo that cleans your hair and not my pockets. Which is when I found this Fresh & Clean shampoo from TRESemmé.
And after using it, I think that it’s among the best drugstore variety dry shampoos today.
The best thing about this product is its weightless formula that absorbs dirt and oil without weighing your hair down.
So if you want bouncy, voluminous tresses, this product is the right pick for you. Besides, it doesn’t contain any phthalates, sulfates, or silicones which I think is a fantastic thing for a shampoo that is so reasonably priced.
I also like how the TRESemmé Fresh & Clean dry shampoo doesn’t leave any residue after use. What it does leave behind is a clean, fresh citrus fragrance.
This however means that the shampoo has an added perfume. This is fine by me as the scent is really mild, but it might irritate very sensitive scalp skin.
So in case you have issues like eczema or prosiasis, I suggest you invest in a product like Klorane or Living Proof despite the price.
If not, this is a great everyday use dry shampoo.
Pros:
- The formula is very effective especially for the price
- The scent is very mild but pleasant and helps hair feel cleaner
- The product is very effective and reduce oiliness in just a few sprays
Cons:
- Contains alcohol and added perfumes that might not suit very sensitive scalp
- It contains butane and propane that might not be eco-friendly
My Ratings:
- Ability To Reduce Greasiness – 4/5
- Non-Flakiness – 4.5/5
- Ingredients & Formula – 3.5/5
- Price – 5/5

Monat’s The Champ Conditioning Dry Shampoo

The one thing the Monat’s The Champ Conditioning dry shampoo has mastered is the art of cleansing the hair without stripping them of their natural oils.
So when you spray the product on your scalp, it absorbs any excess oil and dirt at the roots.
But the vitamin-rich, nourishing formulation keeps your strands hydrated and soft.
I like that the cleanser contains a patented blend of oils, including sunflower, coconut, meadowfoam, and lemon peel oil that replenish moisture to strands.
After using my hair looks clean, soft, and healthy in between washes and especially when I get back from a sweaty workout from the gym.
Pros:
- The conditioning formula doesn’t make hair dry or frizzy
- It has a mild, pleasant scent that reduces smell from sweat on scalp
- The lemon peel extracts helps reduce oiliness
- Contains added vitamins that help make hair look plump
Cons:
- The shampoo is a very expensive
My Ratings:
- Ability To Reduce Greasiness – 4.5/5
- Non-Flakiness – 4.5/5
- Ingredients & Formula – 4.55/5
- Price – 3/5
How To Use Dry Shampoo For Oily Hair
- Before you dive into buying the right dry shampoo for your hair, it is important to know a few things about them. The first thing to remember is to always spray it on dry hair. That’s the whole point of “dry” shampoo!
- Second, keep your distance while spraying the product on the hair. Don’t spritz it for a long time at one spot. Partition your hair and keep rotating the bottle.
- A great tip for first-time dry shampoo users is to apply a little amount and build-up as you go. Also, don’t forget to spray underneath your hair and not just on the top.
- Plus, it’s okay if you see a few whitish streaks after using a dry shampoo. These blend into your hair and turn invisible after a while.
- If you feel your tresses are getting too dry, you can always follow up with a dry conditioner.
How To Select The Right Dry Shampoo For Oily Hair
If you’re wondering how to select the right dry shampoo for your greasy hair, then here are two things that are something to look for when finding a dry shampoo for your oily hair.
With the huge variety of dry shampoos now available on the market, choosing the right product for your individual needs can be overwhelming. How do you know which shampoo is best for your hair type? In this guide, we will walk you through the process of how to select the right dry shampoo for oily hair.
First things first, you need to understand the basics about dry shampoo and how it works. Dry shampoo is a styling solution that primarily serves to absorb oils and odors from scalp and hair. It typically comes in either an aerosol spray or powder form. When applied to the scalp and throughout the lengths of the hair, it soaks up the excess oil, creating more of a matte finish.
Now that you have a better idea of how dry shampoo works, it’s time to determine what factors should you be looking for when it comes to choosing a dry shampoo. The most important feature to consider is the type of formulation it is. You can find dry shampoos that are specifically designed for oily hair. Look for shampoos with ingredients such as clay, silica, rice starch, or kaolin—all which have high oil-absorbing abilities.
The texture of the dry shampoo is also a factor to consider. If your hair is particularly oily, look for a powder-based formula as this type of dry shampoo will provide the most oil absorption. If your hair is less oily, an aerosol spray with finer particles may work better for you.
The scent of the dry shampoo is also worth considering. If you want a shampoo that includes other beneficial ingredients such as nourishing vitamins, you may want to look for a spray with a mild, pleasant scent. However, if you are mainly just looking for a product that purely offers oil absorption, opt for an unscented powder instead.
Finally, when it comes to selecting the right dry shampoo for your oily hair, it’s always recommended to use a highly-rated product that has been tested and proven to work. If you have sensitive skin, look for ingredients that are suited for delicate scalps.
FAQs
Why does my hair still look greasy after dry shampoo?
A lot of times the natural oils in your fingertips can transfer to your hair making it look oily, even if you’ve just sprayed on dry shampoo.
Do not use your fingers to rub dry shampoo in, as it might still make your hair appear greasy.
Also keep your hands to yourself after you’ve cleansed your hair with dry shampoos. Constant touching will undo all the work done by your dry shampoo.
How Can You Control Oily Hair?
Oily hair is nothing to sweat about. Just a little effort, and it’s in control. How? Well, you already know one way – dry shampoos. Some other little hacks to manage oily hair are given below:
Rinse your hair with cold water: Yes, even in the winters. Sorry. Rinsing with cold water closes the pores on the scalp, decreasing the production of sweat and sebum.
Another amazing thing cold water does is help seal the hair cuticle after shampooing, keeping strands smooth. Giving it an apple cider vinegar rinse once a week is also a good idea.
Keep away from the blow-dry: And the hair straightener for good measure. These gadgets heat the hair, increasing the greasiness.
Stop touching your hair: Your fingertips and palms contain natural oils just like the scalp. By frequently running your fingers through your hair, you’re only making it more oily.
Change the way you apply hair conditioner: Don’t skip it completely. A conditioner is still essential to add moisture to your strands. Just keep its application at the hair ends. Adding it to the scalp might increase product build-up and oiliness.
Final Thoughts on the Dry Shampoos For Greasy Hair
I can go on and on about the perks of using a dry shampoo. It takes less time to get ready in the morning.
Your hair’s protected from the effects of over-washing. And it’s a handy way to add volume to your locks without blow-drying them.
So even if you do not have a particularly oily scalp, dry shampoos can be a game-changer.
But if a greasy scalp is your main concern, these products help you mask its effects in no time.
