How I tested the best shampoo for blue hair?
I had dyed my hair blue recently and didn’t want the color to fade with washing. So I wanted to check out a shampooo for blue hair. I used these products myself for a few weeks to see how well they worked. To make things easier for you guys I’ve rated them from 1-5 based on certain criteria. These inlcude:
- Color Protect – The shampoo should protect your blue hair dye from fading. So it means sulfates are a no-no and UV color protect systems get a plus point.
- Color Enhancing – Not all shampoos do this, but certain color depositing shampoos add blue pigment to hair to prevent hair dye from fading by strengthening it with every wash.
- Hair Care and Gentleness – Blue dyed hair is often bleached so your tresses are vulnerable to begin with. So a gentle shampoo that softens hair and reverses damage is a huge plus.

How To Choose The Best Shampoo For Blue Hair
Blue hair is a bold and unique fashion statement that requires special care and attention. After all, you didn’t spend all that time and money achieving that perfect shade just to watch it fade away within a few washes. That’s why it’s crucial to choose the right shampoo for blue hair to help maintain its vibrancy and shine.
Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the best shampoo for blue hair.
1. Look for sulfate-free options: Sulfates can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Opt for shampoos that are gentle on color-treated hair and don’t contain harsh sulfates.
2. Check for UV protection: The sun’s UV rays can cause hair color to fade faster, especially for blue hair. Look for shampoos with added UV protection to help shield your locks from the sun’s damaging effects.
3. Choose nourishing ingredients: Blue hair is more prone to dryness, so it’s important to choose a shampoo that adds moisture and nourishment to the hair. Look for ingredients such as argan oil, coconut oil, and shea butter to help keep your locks healthy and hydrated.
4. Aim for a pH-balanced formula: The ideal pH balance for hair is around 5.5. Choosing a shampoo within this range can help keep your scalp and hair healthy, leading to better color retention.
By keeping these factors in mind, you can find the best shampoo for blue hair. Remember to read product labels carefully, and look for shampoos that cater specifically to color-treated hair to ensure that your blue locks stay vibrant and healthy.
Which Is The Best Conditioner For Blue Hair
The best conditioner for blue hair will help you maintain the color intensity while keeping your locks soft and healthy. Argan oil-based conditioners work best for blue hair as they provide moisture and nourishment to the hair without causing any color fading.
They also help in repairing the damage caused by bleaching and coloring. One of the top choices for blue hair is the Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Conditioner. Infused with argan oil and keratin, this conditioner deeply nourishes the hair and helps in restoring its natural elasticity and shine. It is also free of sulfates, parabens, and phthalates which makes it safe for use on colored hair.
Another recommended conditioner for blue hair is the Joico Color Balance Blue Conditioner. It is specially formulated to eliminate brassy tones and maintain the intensity of blue hair. Powered with Bio-Advanced Peptide Complex, this conditioner helps in repairing and protecting the hair from future damage.
Lastly, if you are looking for a vegan and cruelty-free option, the Celeb Luxury Viral Colorwash in Extreme Blue is the one for you. Not only does it condition the hair, but it also deposits color with each use, making sure your blue hair stays vibrant and bold.
How to Prevent Your Blue Color from Fading
Preventing your blue hair color from fading is a bit of an daunting task, but with a little know-how and a little bit of perseverance, you can achieve success! Here are my top tips:
- Follow a hair color care routine – A good hair color care routine includes washing your hair with a shampoo that is formulated to prevent color fading, which basically means using a sulfate-free shampoo. I also recommend using a conditioner that defends against the build-up of damage (silicone-free), and using a scalp moisturizer on a regular basis that helps keep hair healthy and reduces some of the damage from blue hair coloring.
- Avoid the sun – Sun exposure is one of the primary causes of hair color fading. Make sure to wear a hat or scarf every day when you’re outside, and avoid exposing your hair to direct sunlight. Or simply use a hair sunscreen (yes, that’s a thing!)
- Use hair products that are designed to protect against color fading – Some of the best hair products on the market are designed to protect your hair from color fading. Look for brands that have a stellar reputation for delivering high-quality products that protect against damage. These include sulfate-free products, conditioners with UV filters, or maybe even shampoos/toners with blue pigment that enhances color.
- Take good care of your locks – Make sure to keep your locks healthy by regularly shampooing them and conditioning them properly. This will help to prevent color fading and promote healthy strands.
If you follow these tips religiously, you should be able to keep your blue hair color looking vibrant for years to come!
Why You Need A Sulfate-Free Shampoo For Blue Hair?
A sulfate-free shampoo isn’t good just for blue hair, but it’s necessary for ALL colored hair. Sulfates are a type of surfactants (foaming and cleansing agent) that cleanse hair very thoroughly, removing all grease, dirt and even hair color pigments from your hair strand.
So using a sulfate-based shampoo can remove hair dye and make it fade easily. So you need to use a sulfate-based shampoo for blue hair, and every colored hair.
There are several shampoos called blue shampoos that may or may not be sulfate-free. These are designed to cancel out orange tones from bleached blonde hair. However, these, if they are sulfate-free, can also be used to strengthen the color on blue hair as the pigments in the blue shampoo can add to your colored hair, making it last longer.
We’ve rounded up the top products for your color-treated hair. Check out the best shampoo for blue hair below:
Tigi Bed Head Color Goddess
Best Shampoo For Blue Hair Overall

I tried out the Tigi Bed Head Color Goddess as it is a well known brand and the shampoo claimed to be specifically for colored hair.
But unfortunately I was very disappointed in this shampoo. Let’s first start off with the things I actually liked.

It is a great color-protect shampoo for any shade of hair dye and not just blue hair. And it also contains a Color Lockdown Technology helps protect your hair color from UV radiation.
However, this doesn’t matter due to the presence of sulfates in the shampoo. Yup! It contains both SLS and SLES.
It removed a lot of my blue hair dye in one wash. So there’s no way I was using it again.
To be fair to it, I did like the formula. It was clarifying and yet it contain sweet almond oil, coconut oil, vitamin B5, vitamin E, and keratin that not just form a protective barrier on your color-treated hair, but they also repair any damage or split ends.
It’s a great pick if you have dry, damaged hair. And a lot of users also swear by its amazing fragrance. So extra points for that!
So it might be a good “shampoo” on it’s own. It’s definitely not a good “shampoo for blue hair” or any dyed hair in fact.
Pros:
- Pleasant vanilla fragrance
- Contains UV filters that protect hair dye from fading due to the sun
- Removes excess oil from hair as it’s very clarifying
- Contains sweet almond and coconut oil that nourish hair
Cons:
- Contains sulfates so it will strip hair dye
- Added perfume not for sensitive scalps
- Makes hair dry and tangled due to excess use of surfactants
My Ratings:
- Color Protect – 3/5
- Color Enhancing – 3.5/5
- Hair Care and Gentleness – 3.5/5

Punky Bluemania 3-in-1 Color Depositing Shampoo & Conditioner
Best Color Depositing Shampoo For Blue Hair

If you don’t want to go to the salon every other week to retouch your roots, I feel a color depositing shampoo is your best bet.
So I had to try out this Punky Bluemania as it’s one such shampoo that not only prevents your color from fading but adds fresh pigment to it too.
And guess what? I absolutely loved it. My hair loved it too!
I liked that the ingredients list includes keratin, hydrolyzed quinoa protein, and amino acids. These help strengthen your hair and repair any damage caused by the bleaching and coloring process.
I could feel my tresses look really soft and healthy with continued use. So that was a huge plus point apart from color-protection.
True to its name, the 3-in-1 shampoo cleanses, nourishes, and adds color. So you get a shampoo, conditioner, and hair dye in one product.
But I have kind of dry hair so I use an additional conditioner. If you have straight, oily hair however you can actually skip conditioning thanks to this product.
I also liked how the shampoo gave my locks have a lovely sheen.
I was impressed with the mild, 100 percent cruelty-free formula. And the fact that it is sulfate-free and gentle enough to be used everyday.
If you want to switch up your hair color, Punky has several shampoos to match the tone of your tresses.
But you have to be careful as the shampoo is very strongly pigmented. So it can stain bathroom tiles, towels and even your pillowcases.
Pros:
- Sulfate free shampoo so it won’t strip hair dye
- Nourishes hair with its protein-rich formula
- Adds color pigment to ensure hair dye lasts longer
- Adds shine to hair as it contains argan oil
- Cruelty-free formula

R+Co Gemstone Color Shampoo
Best Shampoo For Blue Hair And Oily Scalp

Another great shampoo for blue hair is the Gemstone Color Shampoo by R+co. I really liked its extremely gentle formula and the fact that it is free of parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, gluten, and petrolatum.
And the best part is that this shampoo is completely cruelty free as well.
On using what impressed me most was that this shampoo could thoroughly cleanse hair without stripping hair dye. Which is actually rare as most color-protect shampoos contain oil and silicones that coat hair to protect hair dye.
In a few washes the shampoo removed excess sebum, dirt, dandruff flakes, and other impurities from my scalp without stripping the hair color.
I also loved the fresh, citrusy scent on this shampoo. But there are a few hiccups with this product. First of all it’s a tad too expensive. But in my opinion is a great splurge as the formula is amazing.
Secondly, it’s too drying for my locks. So while it’s a great choice for oily hair, it can leave already-dry tresses in a mess.
Pros:
- Free from sulfates and other harsh chemicals so it won’t strip color or moisture
- Removes excess oil and dandruff flakes as it’s very clarifying
- Exfoliates scalp gently thanks to the lemon formula
- Refreshing citrus fragrance
Cons:
- Expensive compared to Matrix and Punky shampoos
- Can dry hair as it’s acidic and clarifying
- Added perfume might not suit sensitive scalps
My Ratings:
- Color Protect – 4.5/5
- Color Enhancing – 4/5
- Hair Care and Gentleness – 3.5/5

If you use blue shampoos on blue hair, the blue pigments might help strengthen the color. Most of these shampoos also come with color-protect formulas. So these even help with preventing fading and adding shine.
What will purple shampoo do to blue hair?
Purple shampoos are very popular. Unfortunately, they do not have any effect on blue-colored hair. These shampoos are enriched with violet pigments that help cancel out brassy and yellowish undertones from blonde hair. They do not add blue pigment to your hair.
