Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo (best shampoo for African American hair overall)

shampoo for natural hair growth

As I have curly hair, I always find it hard to settle in on one shampoo because some of the shampoos I’ve tried out in the past made my hair feel further dried out and coarse.

But once I tried the Shea Moisture shampoo I have to say that my hair started to feel renewed again. It deep cleansed my hair and for sure helped get rid of a lot of the product buildup on the scalp.-

Best Shampoo for Black Hair Growth

I used this along with the Shea Moisture Conditioner and it was the perfect combination for my hair. My hair felt hydrated again and it considerably reduced my hair breakage, by locking the moisture in the strand and sealing the hair cuticles.

What I loved the most was that it had natural ingredients like peppermint (which also gave the shampoo its fragrance), Jamaican black castor oil that helped repair my hair. (Patel, Vinay R et al. “Castor Oil: Properties, Uses, and Optimization of Processing Parameters in Commercial Production.” Lipid insights vol. 9 1-12. 7 Sep. 2016, doi:10.4137/LPI.S40233)

There’s also organic shea butter that made my hair feel moisturized.

I also have to say that it suited my colour-treated hair just fine as it most importantly was completely sulfate-free.

The only thing that I felt could be a disadvantage to some is the peppermint fragrance of the shampoo, which may not suit all and also the consistency, which I found relatively liquidy as compared to other regular shampoos.

Pros:

  •  Helps get rid of product buildup.
  •  Reduces hair breakage.
  •  Moisturizes the hair.

 Sulfate-free.

Cons:

  •  Contains a peppermint fragrance, not suitable to all.

My Ratings:

  • Hair Growth – 4/5
  • Gentle on Hair – 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing – 5/5

Klorane Dry Shampoo

dry shampoo for natural hair

Curly hair is also moisture deprived because the natural oils from the scalp do not reach the entire length of the hair and using regular shampoos often makes the hair dry out further.

Therefore, I chose to use a dry shampoo between washes and I’m so glad I picked the Klorane Shampoo because it really helped my hair feel refreshed on days which otherwise would make me have a bad hair day, as it would stand really greasy and limp.

This shampoo is harvested with organic oat milk and this really soothed my scalp.

natural black hair shampoo

Using this dry shampoo helped get rid of the excess oil and greasiness from my scalp and hair and it was completely sulfate and paraben free which is something that I always look for in a shampoo.

I would like to make a mention that the product details did assure no residue formation, while this product did leave some residue after I sprayed it on.

But the good part is that after brushing my hair; it did dust off relatively quickly and was quite negligible thereafter.

Pros:

  •  Gets rid of oil and greasiness.
  •  Sulfate-free.
  •  Paraben-free.
  •  Contains natural oils.

Cons:

  •  Leaves some white residue.

My Ratings:

  • Hair Growth – 3/5
  • Gentle on Hair – 4/5
  • Moisturizing – 3.5/5

Who Its Good For – Dull, Limp Hair

Maple Holistics Degrease Shampoo

which shampoo is best for hair growth and thickness

Curly hair often tends to get greasy and oily near the scalp and this is definitely a common problem I face.

Once I bought the Maple Holistics shampoo, it reduced the product build up and greasy residue on my scalp that caused clogging of the hair follicles and considerably improved my hair growth.

The reason I decided to try out this shampoo is because it is known to be best suited for curly, oily or coily hair, which well includes my hair type.

What I found that this shampoo felt very gentle on my hair and didn’t strip away the moisture, instead it made my hair feel more nourished and it gave my hair a very vibrant look, while also considerably increasing my hair volume, something that I definitely needed, as coily hair can often stand limp.

Two things that I really liked about this shampoo is that it is completely sulfate and paraben free and also, its fragrance. I am a lover of the lemon fragrance and this shampoo has that subtle smell.

I also need to make a mention about how well this shampoo degreased my hair that I could even go days without having to wash it and without even having to use a dry shampoo, because as research states, coily hair shouldn’t be washed too often.

So it suited me perfectly and was also well within my budget, as this product is reasonably priced.

Pros:

  •  Reduces greasiness on the scalp.
  •  Unclogs the pores.
  •  Sulfate-free.
  •  Paraben-free.
  •  Gentle on the scalp.

Cons:

  •  Contains a lemon fragrance not suitable to all.

My Ratings:

  • Hair Growth – 4/5
  • Gentle on Hair – 4/5
  • Moisturizing – 3.5/5

Who Its Good For – Oily Hair

Maui Moisture Bamboo Fibres Shampoo

natural black hair shampoo

If you are something with curly and colour-treated hair, like me, then this shampoo would work well for you. It helped reduce my hair fall, as it kept tangles at bay, which meant so many lesser strands lost during hair brushing.

Some of the ingredients this shampoo has is what drew me towards buying it.

Ingredients like bamboo fibers, castor oil, neem extract, aloe vera juice and coconut water (what gives this shampoo its smell) definitely make a good combination and it worked well on my hair.

After using this shampoo my hair looked really nourished and kept it well moisturized. Using this shampoo considerably revived my hair and reduced my hair fall by strengthening my weak hair strands.

The only thing that I didn’t like very much was the smell of coconut on my hair, but luckily the smell was negligible and did wear off as my hair began to dry up.

This shampoo is completely free from sulfates, parabens and surfactants and has the added benefit of being reasonably priced.

To sum up my Maui thicken and restore shampoo review, I only need to make a mention about the texture and consistency which was relatively thick as compared to other such shampoos and that was something I disliked, personally.

Pros:

  • Contains natural ingredients.
  • Safe for use on colour-treated hair.
  • Strengthens weakened hair strands.
  • Sulfate-free.
  • Paraben-free.
  • Surfactant-free.

Cons:

  • Thick in texture and consistency.
  • Coconut scented not suitable to all.

My Ratings:

  • Hair Growth – 4.5/5
  • Gentle on Hair – 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing – 4/5

Who Its Good For – Thin, Damaged Hair

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo

best shampoo for hair growth and thickness

Some shampoos in the market contain harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens and silicones and strip your hair of all the moisture and hydration.

Well, Carol’s Daughter shampoo was perfect for my hair because it contains none of these harsh chemicals and balanced out the moisture even after a hair wash.

I’d like to particularly make a mention of some of the ingredients I liked, because there were quite a few natural ingredients which are rare to find in shampoos these days.

There are ingredients like vanilla, aloe vera, sage, shea butter, clove and lavender.

I simply loved the vanilla smell of this shampoo because every time I used it my hair smelled so fresh.

Another good thing about this shampoo is that it is so moisturizing for the hair, it can really make the hair feel soft.

I also want to make a mention about the texture and consistency of this product, which was totally perfect.

Considering the fact that it is reasonably priced, I just went for it without having any second thoughts and it worked out perfectly in my favour.

Pros:

  •  Contains natural ingredients.
  •  Keeps the hair moisturized.
  •  Smooth shampoo texture and consistency.
  •  Sulfate-free.
  •  Paraben-free.
  •  Silicone-free.

Cons:

  • None.

My Ratings:

  • Hair Growth – 4/5
  • Gentle on Hair – 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing – 5/5

Who Its Good For – Type 4a and 4b Black Hair

OGX Renewing Argan Oil Morocco Shampoo

best shampoo for black womens hair

If you’re someone with brittle hair like me then choose this shampoo. It worked perfectly in repairing my damaged hair and strengthened my hair considerably, reducing my hair breakage and brittleness.

I used this shampoo along with its conditioner and it made my hair feel so moisturized and smooth and it kept getting better after each wash.

My coily hair used to often stand dull and limp and using the OGX shampoo brought back life to my hair and made it look so voluminous and full.

I love the infusion of ingredients like argan oil and silk proteins that nourished my hair and gave it a good bounce.

Since I have colour-treated hair, I am always apprehensive about the shampoos I use.

And I can endorse that this shampoo suited my colour-treated hair just fine, as it is sulfate free and didn’t strip away or lighten my hair colour even a bit.

Pros:

  • Repairs damaged hair.
  • Reduces hair breakage.
  • Strengthens weakened hair strands.
  • Moisturizes the hair.
  • Safe to use on colour-treated hair.
  • Sulfate-free.

Cons:

  • None.

My Ratings:

  • Hair Growth – 4/5
  • Gentle on Hair – 3.5/5
  • Moisturizing – 3.5/5

Who Its Good For – Normal To Dry Scalp

How To Select The Best Shampoo For Black Hair Growth And Thickening

There is a specific type of shampoo that suits black hair (or natural hair as it’s called). These shampoos are low on surfactants and always sulfate-free and very nourishing.

This is because black hair or natural hair is always type 4 (very coily) or type 3 (very curly). These hair types get dry very easily due to it’s textures.

Also, shampoos for hair growth are also of a specific type as they contain ingredients that promote hair growth and increase hair thickness and elasticity.

So the right shampoo for black hair growth is a product that is sulfate-free, very nourishing, and contains ingredients that promote new hair growth. If you want to pick a shampoo for growing your black hair you should therefore look at these particular factors before selecting one.

The Shampoo Must Be Sulfate-Free – A sulfate-based shampoo is damaging for any hair type but they can especially hurt type 4 black hair that is already prone to damage and dryness. So a shampoo that promotes hair growth needs to be gentle on hair and not remove moisture.

It Must Have Hair Growth Boosters – The shampoo you’re using to grow your black hair needs to contain ingredients like peppermint oil, caffeine, rosemary extract, etc. that are proven to boost new hair growth in follicles.

The Formula Must Be Nourishing – As I’ve mentioned before, black hair needs a lot of moisturization. So you need a shampoo that (along with being sulfate-free and hair growth friendly) must contain conditioning agents too. Shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, etc. are all ingredients that are great in shampoo formulas for black hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are some ways to increase and improve black hair growth?

Condition your hair after every wash.
Massage your scalp with oil to stimulate the dormant hair follicles.
Use shampoos which do not contain harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens or silicones.
Do not wash your hair too often.

  2. How much time gap does black hair require between washes?

In my opinion, a gap of 5 days minimum is required between washes as frequent washes can make the hair feel dry, coarse and limp. Oiling your hair the night before you wash it and then massaging it into your scalp will definitely benefit you.

3. Why is black hair drier as compared to other hair types?

Like I mentioned earlier, since black hair is curly or coily, the scalp’s natural oils do not coat the entire length of the hair strand and therefore makes only the scalp and roots oily, while the rest of the hair is dry.
