Camellia Flower Oil

This product’s main ingredient is the camellia flower or tea seed flower.

The camellia flower is known to be water-resistant and can help lock in moisture and works to reduce frizz as it not just moisturizes the hair but also works by smoothening out the cuticles on the hair shaft.

Thus improving the texture of the hair and making it smooth and soft to touch and in its appearance.

Camellia flower oil is rich in vitamin E and can help the hair strands become healthier and more resilient, as it conditions the hair well.

This flower contains oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and stearic acid (types of fatty acids) that can help improve hair texture and increase hair shine. It can also contribute to reducing hair friction and static. It can reduce hair damage by keeping the hair well moisturized.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a great ingredient for frizzy hair because it can help repair damaged hair as it conditions the hair and can reduce hair breakage, which can otherwise be caused when frizzy hair is brushed.

It can also help increase the length of the hair by reducing the need for frequent hair trims as the split ends will decrease. It is also good for the scalp as it can help reduce scalp itchiness.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is often used for the skin, but when it comes to the hair, it is hardly talked about. Well, it is very beneficial to the hair as well.

It can help reduce scalp conditions like dandruff and can reduce scalp irritation and itchiness, which is usually caused because of buildup on the scalp.

Limonene

Limonene is an ingredient which is lesser known when it comes to its benefits for the hair. This ingredient can help prevent hair loss and increase hair growth. Limonene is got from refining oil from citrus fruits that contain the compound called d-limonene.

How I tested this product based on parameters

Here are the parameters I chose to test this product:

Hair cleansing ability:

Well, my hair gets super greasy in no time and is prone to dirt and product buildup formation. So, I always look for how powerful is the cleansing ability of the shampoo to be able to successfully get rid of the dirt and buildup.

Hair and scalp gentleness:

I always prefer products that do not contain harsh chemicals like parabens and sulfates. Unfortunately, this shampoo does have sulfates, but it doesn’t have parabens.

So I tested this shampoo to see whether it was gentle on my hair and sensitive scalp even with sulfates, but without any parabens.

Effectiveness of the product:

In this case, the product is specifically designed for use on frizzy hair. So I used this parameter to test how effectively it worked on my hair.  Whether it actually made my hair feel smooth, with an improved texture and getting rid of my frizz.

Scent:

Since the fragrance is of the camellia flower, I expected a light floral-scented shampoo. I am someone who truly detests harsh scents, so this is something I always consider when reviewing a shampoo.

Safety of use on coloured hair:

My hair is colour-treated and some of the shampoos I had used in the past faded my hair colour drastically. So this is something I always consider and most often try out shampoos safe for use on coloured hair.

If the product doesn’t mention and the other aspects seem beneficial to my hair, then I go in for the product either way.

Cost factor:

The ideal cost range I would choose is a shampoo and conditioner set within $30. So since this product is $42, it is definitely above my budget, but since it had promising results of frizz reduction, I decided to buy this product.

Biolage Smooth Proof Shampoo and Conditioner: Overall Review

matrix biolage smooth proof shampoo

The reason why I chose this shampoo in particular is because it promised frizz reduction and my hair is super frizzy, because it has been colour-treated and heat treated over the years, which has now made my hair dry and lead to frizz.

To add to it, I live in a place where the humidity levels are very high, so my hair looks all the more frizzy.

is biolage shampoo sulfate free

Well, did it work on reducing my frizz? Yes, it did! I honestly couldn’t believe how well it worked on my frizzy hair that previously was so unmanageable and couldn’t be tamed. It actually got tamed after using this shampoo and conditioner.

My hair felt smooth and the texture improved over the weeks (I have now used this shampoo for four weeks). So this is something I really liked about this product. Also, the conditioner didn’t weigh down my locs (as it is silicone-free), but in fact, it gave my hair a good bounce.

One thing that I didn’t like about this shampoo is the fact that it contained sulfates, in the form of the ingredient sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).

Well, considering that sodium laureth sulfate is known to be gentler on the hair and scalp as compared to sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and does not strip the hair of any excess moisture, it kind of convinced me to buy this product.

Also, my hair is colour treated and even though this product doesn’t contain parabens, the fact that it contained sodium laureth sulfate bothered me a little in terms of damaging my hair colour and hair, in general.

But luckily for me, it didn’t drastically damage or fade my hair colour at all. Just a slight fading, which I’d say is quite expected from any other shampoo too.

Also, I was really glad that it didn’t make my hair feel dry and the conditioner was powerful enough to help restore the lost moisture if any. It was also gentle on my hair and sensitive scalp and didn’t cause any sort of irritation.

The shampoo is liquidy and lathers very well. It also left no residue on my hair or scalp once I washed it off thoroughly under running water. It cleansed my hair and scalp perfectly of all dirt, grime, product residue and buildup.

The smell of this shampoo is mild and has a floral scent.

Regarding the cost factor, I have to say that I found this product relatively expensive as compared to other such products in the market. It does its job, but at quite a price!
