I have taken a detailed look into some of the best techniques and practices that help you get silky hair as a man.
How To Get Silky Hair As A Man 2021
Use a gentle shampoo
Gentle shampoos are shampoos with little to no harsh chemicals that could threaten the smooth texture of your hair.
A lot of ingredients like sulphates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil etc are common additives in shampoos.
These could cause long term damage to your hair and make it thin and brittle. They also remove the natural oils on your hair that is secreted from the scalp.
This dehydrates your hair and further worsens the hair texture. So it will be very difficult to achieve silky hair if you use these products.
You should also stick to shampoos with natural ingredients like Moroccan oil, coconut oil, aloe vera, etc.
These will not only nourish your hair but will also help in balancing the moisture on your hair and scalp to give you silky soft hair.
Stay away from any sort of artificial colour or artificial fragrance. These can not only dry your hair but will also lead to scalp irritation like itching, flaking etc. especially if you have a sensitive scalp.
Another good product to achieve silky hair is baby shampoos. Yes, you read it right.
Baby shampoos have very mild ingredients and rarely contain harsh chemicals. If you find sulphate or paraben-free shampoos expensive, you can resort to these.

Use a conditioner with natural ingredients
If you want to achieve silky hair, you should never skip a conditioner. It helps in neutralising the dryness that occurs when you wash your hair with shampoo.
A conditioner can also help in quick detangling with minimal breakage. This is something that you can use without using shampoo.
Invest in a good conditioner that contains moisturising ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, argan oil etc.
Remember to choose conditioners that are free of harsh ingredients like sulphates, parabens, mineral oils, phthalates and even artificial fragrances and dyes.
When your hair receives sufficient hydration, it becomes strong and immune to damages.
Oil your hair regularly
You can oil your hair at least once a week for silky hair.
- Coconut oil
- Almond oil
- Argan tree oil
- Olives oil
- Gingelly oil
- Jojoba oil
Avoid styling products
Styling products can leave buildup and residue on your hair which will damage both the scalp and hair. It can stick to your strands and make them feel coarse.
If you absolutely cannot go without these products, select ones which are free of harsh chemical ingredients.
Opt for hair waxes and pomades that are made up of natural materials like beeswax. Also, make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly to get rid of any residue.
Washing your hair correctly
It is important to keep your hair clean and free of residues to make it silky. But you might be washing your hair incorrectly and contributing to the coarse texture and damage.
Make sure that you only use clean water. Water that is chemically treated can make your hair coarse and frizzy.
You don’t have to shampoo your hair every time you wash your hair. But if your hair tends to get greasy, you should use shampoo.
Do not wash your hair often
This is a common hair mistake that people make too often. You might think that the more you wash your hair, the healthier it will be. But that is not the case.
The oils that are produced by your scalp are stripped from your hair when you wash your hair too much.
These oils are necessary for providing hydration and shine to your hair. Otherwise, your hair will turn out to be dry and brittle.
It is recommended to shower once every three days. But if you have an oily scalp or use a lot of hair products like gels and taxes, you can increase the frequency of this.
When you wash your hair, use only an adequate amount of shampoo. Excessive hair products can dry out your hair.
Focus on your scalp and roots. They will have a lot of dirt and buildup from your hair products.
Condition the tips of your hair
It is important to focus on your mid-lengths to the ends when you are conditioning. Your ends tend to be dry so it needs an extra dose of hydration.
If you condition your scalp it could look greasy and weighed down.
For people with short hair, it could be a little difficult to keep the conditioner away from the scalp so you should opt for a mild volumising conditioner.
If you have dry and coarse hair, you can condition your hair more frequently, even without shampooing your hair.
Towel dry your hair
It is important to stay away from heating tools as much as possible to achieve silky hair. So practice towel drying your hair after a shower.
You can also use a cotton T-shirt to dry your hair which is gentler than a bath towel.
Massage natural oils into your hair
After shampooing, massage some coconut oil or other natural oils into your scalp and comb your hair with a fine-toothed plastic comb.
You can also massage it into your scalp using your fingers.
Take very little amount otherwise, your hair can appear to be oily. If you do it more than once a week, it will weigh down your hair.
Comb your hair every morning
If you want silky hair, it is important to keep it free of frizz and knots so you should comb it regularly. My personal favourite is a wooden comb but you can use any convenient brush.
It is best to comb your hair every day in the morning since your hair can develop tangles in your sleep. If you don’t comb your hair regularly, your hair will become coarse and rough.
You have to be very gentle with your hair while lending tangles. You can use oils or gels to work through the tangles and remove them easily.

Hair color and chemical treatments can cause dehydration which will make your hair dry and brittle.
So it is best to steer clear from such chemical treatments when you are looking forward to getting silky hair.

Minimise exposure to sunlight
Sun damage is not only bad for the skin but also for your hair. Make sure to use a cap or a bandana while out in the sun.
The harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun can cause damage to your hair and make it dry and coarse.
Take your vitamins
It is important to take care of your overall health if you want smooth and healthy hair.
So you have to have a balanced diet that will give you the necessary nutrients for healthy hair like Zinc, Iron, Vitamins, Proteins, Omega 3 fatty acids etc.
You can also resort to hair supplements to get these nutrients.
There are a lot of simple methods to get silky shiny hair. Most of these can be easily incorporated into your daily life to see good results.
But remember, these things can differ according to your hair type and lifestyle. So do not expect the same result for everyone. You will have to tweak things according to your hair personalised needs.
The golden rule of hair care is to understand your hair type first and then select your hair products.
This applies to shampoos, masks and even hair oils. Different types of hair have different needs so “one size fits all” definitely does not apply to hair products.
For example, naturally curly hair has a completely different set of needs as compared to fine and straight hair.
However, the above tips are a few things that you should take care of, regardless of your hair type, to see the best results.
