In my opinion, knowing a little about the backstory of each brand is important. It will give you a better insight on how reputed the brand is, how long they have been into making hair products and whether they are worthy of you trying out their products at all!
Well, lucky for you guys, you can cut to the chase because I’ve done the research part and you only need to read it. So here is everything you need to know about these brands.

Back in 1975, Joico was founded in Los Angeles by Steve Stefano, a hairdresser from Southern California. The main reason behind him starting Joico was to be able to develop quality products to be sold to the public because he felt that most companies selling products then were underperforming.

Joico K-Pak Color-Therapy Shampoo
The ingredients:
This shampoo contains a blend of three very powerful ingredients that I felt gave my hair all-around protection.
While the African manketti oil helped protect the hair from colour fading and environmental damage, the keratin helped nourish and protect my hair strands, thereby renewing my hair and replenishing its lost proteins.
Along with these two ingredients, the argan oil helped smoothen, moisturize and act like natural hair conditioner to my hair.
The texture of the shampoo:
This shampoo has a relatively thick, but liquid texture, which I was very smooth and lathered easily into my wet hair.
How well it worked on my hair:
If I had to describe it in one word, I’d say it was – superb! Yes, this shampoo worked really well on my hair, it not just cleansed my hair but also renewed my hair shine and lustre.
In terms of it protecting my hair colour, it was one of the best shampoos I have used so far. It also nourished my hair and made my hair feel soft.
Its usage:
While lathering this shampoo into my wet hair was super easy, I still chose to dilute it with a little water before applying it on my hair (because that’s usually how I like to use my shampoo). Well, it made it even easier for me to lather it and massage it into my hair and scalp.
The packaging:
I really liked the packaging of this product, the shampoo bottle comes with a screw-on lid that also has a flip cap which opens and shuts tightly. Also, it is a sleek bottle. Both these features make it super convenient for travel purposes.
Price:
Well, while this shampoo was more on the expensive side, I paid $60.50 for the set of shampoo; conditioner and a lustre lock cream for the hair. Overall, I found that it was worth the price I paid.

Kenra Colour Charge Shampoo
The ingredients:
The Kenra shampoo has only one main ingredient, keratin, which is a very nourishing ingredient for the hair and helps renew hair shine, smoothness and lustre. This shampoo didn’t have any specific ingredients for colour-protection.
The texture of the shampoo:
The texture of this shampoo is liquid, which I felt was easy to use and lathered quite well.
How well it worked on my hair:
It worked well in terms of nourishing my hair. My hair felt soft and smooth once I used this shampoo. But it didn’t do a great job at colour-protection.
The product description stated that it can protect hair colour for around 50 hair washes and well, while initially it maintained my hair colour, but after a month or so, my hair colour started fading (but not drastically).
Its usage:
It was easy to use. You can simply use it like any other shampoo, by applying sufficient amount of shampoo on your wet hair and lathering it in well.
The packaging:
While the product/bottle of shampoo was sleek, I didn’t like that it had a press cap, because it is not convenient for travel, as I find that somehow, no matter how tight I press it close, some shampoo always leaks out.
Price:
I paid $20.99 for this shampoo, which I felt was quite expensive, as compared to other such shampoos.
Joico Shampoo Vs Kenra Shampoo
Ingredients:
Both these shampoos had one ingredient in common – keratin, while the Joico shampoo had two other additional ingredients (African manketti oil and argan oil) which were together, a powerful blend for the hair.
The Joico shampoo specifically had an ingredient for colour-protection, which the Kenra shampoo didn’t have.
Effectiveness on the hair:
I would choose the Joico shampoo for this parameter. It not just worked well in terms of colour-protection, but also benefited my hair on an overall basis – colour protection, renewal of hair lustre and shine and overall protection from hair damage as well.
Gentleness on the scalp:
Both these shampoos were gentle on my hair and scalp. My scalp is sensitive to sulfates and luckily, both these shampoos didn’t have sulfates.
Pricing:
Considering the average pricing for just the Joico shampoo vs. The Kenra shampoo (because I bought the Joico shampoo as a set along with other products), I’d have to say that both these shampoos were on the expensive side, for the quantity of product I got.

Well, I clearly have a preference between these two shampoos if I had to choose one again and that would be the Joico K-PAK Color-Therapy Shampoo! The reason I am choosing this shampoo against the Kenra Colour Charge Shampoo is because of a few aspects that I liked.
