It can be difficult to find hair products that are simultaneously good for your hair and the environment. But these two hair care brands, Love Beauty and Planet and Hair Food are great at doing just that!

These brands use natural ingredients that are organic and in some cases vegan and have packaging and manufacturing processes that do not hurt the environment.

Both the brands have a wide range of products including shampoos, conditioners, hair serums, hair masks and other hair care products.

But which of the two is better and more eco-friendly? Today I will be comparing both these brands and two products from each of these brands to find just that out.

Love Beauty And Planet Vs Hair Food Shampoo

About Love Beauty And Planet

Love beauty and Planet was co-founded by Piyush Jain who put together a team of hair stylists, hair experts, marketers, etc. to create Love Beauty and Planet.

The aim of this brand is to provide natural and organic hair care while also considering the impact manufacturing has on the planet.

Love beauty and Planet are not just committed to using natural and ethically sourced ingredients in those formulas but they also make sure that their packaging comes from 100% recycled plastic.

They also have initiatives that help you recycle their shampoo and conditioner bottles to help reduce waste.

What I liked most about this brand is that they care for your body as much as they care for the planet. They have partnered with a fragrance brand called Givaudan which helps them add scents to their products from natural, essential oil sources all of which are obtained ethically.

This is a PETA-approved brand which means they are completely vegan and do not test on animals either.

While most hair care brands are content with being Vegan and using recyclable packaging, Love Beauty and Planet goes a step further and aims to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions as well.

In fact, some of the shampoos and conditioners are designed in such a way that individuals need less water  while using them.

Love Beauty and Planet is owned by Unilever.

About Hair Food

Hair Food is one of the brands that have taken the hair care world by surprise. It is a subsidiary of Procter and Gamble and gives you quality formula and eco-friendly products at very affordable prices.

It is not as huge of a brand as Love Beauty and Care as it’s very recent but is steadily gaining popularity thanks to a lot of influencers using their products.

Hair Food is known for using exotic and interesting ingredients in their shampoos and conditioners. These include stuff like white nectarine, coconut milk, lavender water, chai (Indian tea) spice and more.

Their hair care products are divided into categories based on your hair needs. So you have shampoos, conditioners, serums etc. that work for different issues like hair purifying, color protection, frizz smoothening, damage repair, curl enhancing, etc.

Comparison Between Love Beauty And Planet and Hair Food

Ingredients

Both Love Beauty and Planet and Hair Food are a cruelty-free, PETA-approved brand, and this means that they do not use animal or animal derived ingredients. Also, both brands support the use of natural ingredients.

Love Beauty and Planet commits to being at least 90 percent natural and organic.

Products Range

Hair Food has a less wide range compared to Love Planet and Beauty. In fact, Love Planet and Beauty are a complete body care brand and have a lot of body washes, face washes, scrubs, etc. in their range as well while Hair Food focuses solely on hair.

Pricing

The pricing for both these products is almost at the same level. Some individual Love Beauty and Planet Products might be cheaper than the Hair Food ones but on an average they all have a similar price range. They are slightly more expensive than a drugstore brand but less than quality salon brands like Olaplex or Aveda.

Eco-Friendliness and Environmental Consciousness

Love Beauty and Planet wins this round as they not only use recyclable packaging but also use formulas (in their shampoos, conditioners, etc.) that will help you use less water.

They also create their products in a way that doesn’t increase greenhouse gasses emission.

Love Beauty And Planet Delightful Detox Daily Vs Hair Food Purify Shampoo

I had the opinion that Love Beauty and Planet (LBP) were somewhat more expensive than Hair Food but these shampoos proved me wrong.

The LBP Detox Daily shampoo I got online for $15 for a 32 Fl. Oz. bottle but the Hair Food Purify shampoo was $11 for 17 Fl Oz. A tad more expensive than Love Planet and Beauty.

Coming to the formula, I noticed that both shampoos are sulfate-free and use milder, more natural surfactants to cleanse and purify your scalp and hair.

Both shampoos use Cocamidopropyl Betaine, a coconut-derived surfactant to cleanse your hair. This is very mild and doesn’t strip hair dye. So you can use both the shampoos on colored hair without a worry.

The other chief ingredient in the LBP Shampoo is bamboo charcoal. As we know, charcoal is great at absorbing impurities and removing dirt, grime and oil. So if you have a lot of product buildup, then the Love Beauty and Planet shampoo is great for you.

On the other hand, the major ingredient in the Hair Food Shampoo is tea tree oil and lavender, both of which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

Tea tree oil is also excellent for treating dandruff, itching, redness and fungal infections of the scalp.

So after using both these shampoos I can say that the Love Beauty and Planet Shampoo is good for damaged oily hair that has a lot of product buildup.

However, the Hair Food Purify shampoo is good for oily hair with dandruff issues or very sensitive skin as it soothes your scalp while gently cleansing it.

I also found out that the Love Beauty and Planet Detox Shampoo contains added perfumes which really disappointed me. It won’t harm your hair or scalp directly but it can cause irritation if you have sensitivities. So choose wisely.

After using the Love Beauty and Planet Detox Shampoo and the Hair Food Purify shampoo both, I noticed that the former left my hair limp and did little to add volume.

I suppose this is because the LBP shampoo also contains coconut oil as a major component. So if you’re looking for volume as well as cleansing, I think the Hair Food Purify Shampoo is better.

And if it doesn’t contain perfumes, I’d totally say this is the better shampoo. Just not the cheaper one!

FAQS about Love Beauty And Planet Vs Hair Food

Which Love, Beauty and Planet shampoo is best for oily hair?

There are separate lines of Love Beauty and Planet shampoos that are exclusively formulated for detoxing and reducing greasiness on hair and scalp. Some of these shampoos include the Love Beauty and Planet Vetiver and Tea Tree Shampoo, Sea Salt and Bergamot Shampoo, and the Charcoal and Bergamot Shampoo.

Is Hair Food good for natural hair?

Yes, there is a separate line in Hair Food exclusively designed for natural Afro hair. These include shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks designed with highly nourishing ingredients such as shea butter. These products help soften natural hair, enhance curl texture and prevent damage. They are also all silicone free so you don’t have to worry about product buildup.

Did Unilever recall Hair Food Shampoo?

No they did not. Unilevel voluntarily recalled some dry shampoos from a few of its brands as they contained an aerosol called benzene which can have potential health risks. Some of the dry shampoo brands that were recalled included Dove, TResemme, TiGi, Suave and Nexxus. Hair Food wasn’t one of them.

Summary on Love Beauty And Planet Vs Hair Food Shampoo

All in all, I can say that surprisingly enough the Love Beauty and Planet and Hair Food brands are very similar.

Both are PETA-approved brands that use natural vegan ingredients. And both of these brands do not use any silicones, parabens, formaldehyde, mineral oil, sulfates or other harsh ingredients.

Yes, Love Beauty and Planet can have some perfume added but they claim it’s sourced from natural essential oils. So if you don’t have too much of a sensitive scalp they are not that much of a worry.

The only difference is that Love Beauty and Planet actively tries to be greener in their manufacturing process as well.

There was no information available about Hair Food’s packaging and carbon dioxide emissions, so I’m assuming they aren’t much of a concern.

However, Love Beauty and Planet use only recyclable bottles and also make a point to use manufacturing techniques that generate less carbon dioxide.
