What Is A Low Wattage Hair Dryer?

Most hair dryers have a wattage of 2000 and above. A watt is a unit of power and denotes the amount of energy (in this case electrical energy) it consumes. A low-watt hair dryer usually has a wattage between 1000-1800. So these do not consume as much energy as regular hair dryers do. These types of hair dryers are designed to be more compact and foldable as well because they are mostly used while traveling.

How I Tested These Top Low Wattage Hair Dryers?

I tried out these top low-watt hair dryers by myself and then rated them based on certain criteria that I’ve listed below. This rating is on a scale of 1-5. The criteria includes:

  • Wattage – Obviously the first thing I checked was the wattage, the lower it is the better I rated the hair dryer,
  • Hair Drying Power – Having a low wattage usually means that the power also would be less. But I checked which hair dryer could dry hair quickest.
  • Functionality – I also looked at the different features the hair dryer had such as cool air button, travel friendly design etc. and rated them better if these features were available.
  • Price – Lastly, price matters. I checked if the hair dryer’s price tag matched its power and capabilities or not.

Top Low Wattage Hair Dryers 2022

I used the top low-watt hair dryers to review them and here’s how it went.

BaByliss PRO TT Tourmaline Titanium Travel Dryer

Wattage – 1000 Watts

best low wattage hair dryer for caravan

I got this hair dryer to try first as Babyliss has such great brand value and I’ve used their flat irons before and loved it.

Now coming to this ProTT hair dryer, I knew it was a compact travel dryer but nothing could have prepared me for seeing the product. It’s…cute. There’s no other word for it.

It fits right in the palms of my hands! I was a bit skeptical as to its power as it was so tiny and had only a 1000 watts on it. But I was proved wrong.

100 watt hair dryer

It has a titanium core instead of a ceramic one which gets heated up very quickly and retains heat. So you get a hot blast of air that can actually dry your hair very quickly.

I was also happy to see the tourmaline in it so you know it’s going to be a good choice for frizzy hair.

Another good thing about this Babyliss Travel hair dryer is that it comes with a 110/220 switch and dual voltage so it works in different countries while you are traveling.

If the Babyliss Pro was just a tiny bit bigger or more powerful it would have been the perfect hair dryer. However, due to its size I wouldn’t recommend using it on long hair. It will take forever to dry.

Also despite the low wattage, the heat generated by the titanium core might be a bit much for fine, damaged hair.

So I suggest using it for short to medium hair that is not too fine or dry.

Pros:

  • Small, compact size and foldable design ideal for traveling
  • Dual voltage design that works in different countries
  • Tourmaline technology that generates negative ions to control frizz
  • Titanium core that heats up quickly and generates more hot air

Cons:

  • The compact and 1000 Watt dryer will take not dry long hair fast or easily
  • The titanium body can heat up quickly and might not suit fine damaged hair

My Ratings:

  • Wattage – 5/5
  • Hair Drying Power – 3.5/5
  • Functionality – 4/5
  • Price – 4.5/5

Conair miniPRO Tourmaline Ceramic Travel Hair Dryer

Wattage – 1200 W

best low wattage hair dryers

Like Babyliss, Conair is a leading brand when it comes to hair styling tools. And in my opinion this miniPRo hair dryer didn’t disappoint.

First of all, I really liked the extra 200 W compared to the Babyliss. Not much, but it gives you a slightly more amount of power to dry hair, making it easier to use it on longer hair.

I also liked the multiple heat settings and concentrator nozzle attachment. Both contribute to making this hair dryer a much better experience for styling.

But my favorite part is probably the ceramic-tourmaline technology. Ceramic doesn’t get heated easily and distributes heat generated evenly on hair. So if you have fragile or damaged hair, this is it!

200 watt hair dryer

However, is this travel hair dryer really better than Babyliss? Well, it depends.

The biggest difference I noticed was the cord. The cord on Conair is just 2ft which is almost half the length of Babyliss. So it can get difficult to maneuver.

300 watt hair dryer

Also, while this hair dryer claims to be dual voltage I found it wasn’t really so. Yes, you can use it in Europe without an adapter but it will lock the “”high temperature” setting. So it’s only on one setting you can use it unlike Babyliss.

So I’d say go for Babyliss if you’re looking for travel-friendliness and ease of use. However, if you’re looking for something less expensive to simply dry and style fine, thin hair, Conair is the better choice.

Pros:

  • Ceramic honeycomb design ensures even distribution of heat
  • Three temperature settings that you let you control heat on hair
  • Tourmaline ionic technology prevents and controls frizz
  • Compact size and foldable handle makes it travel-friendly
  • Comparatively cheaper than Babyliss
  • Slightly higher wattage makes it suitable for drying long hair

Cons:

  • Not truly dual voltage as you can use only one temperature setting abroad
  • Cord is very short and can make this hair dryer difficult to use and maneuver

My Ratings:

  • Wattage – 4.5/5
  • Hair Drying Power – 4.5/5
  • Functionality – 4/5
  • Price – 4/5

TYMO Hair Dryer with Diffuser

Wattage – 1200 W

600 watt hair dryer

Okay so I was tempted to test out this hair dryer by TYMO thanks to the sheer number of features it offers. I originally have curly hair texture that I straighten so I was excited to try out the diffuser.

Most of my curly-haired girlies will know that a diffuser is much better for your hair as it retains the shape of the curls and does not damage them with heat.

So this hair dryer was already winning in my eyes. But then there’s the four heat settings and self-cleaning feature that really sold the deal.

But my favorite has to be the cold shot button. At the end of your hair drying session, this tool blasts a wave of cold air on hair that helps set hairstyles and prevent frizz. So yay!!

low wattage hair dryer for curly hair

Also the cord is around 8ft which gives you plenty of space to move around and the 1200 wattage is enough to dry long hair but still very low. So good going TYMO!

Now coming to the catch. Yes there’s one. Obviously. This TYMO hair dryer is very high-priced. In fact, it’s almost three times more expensive than the Babyliss dryer.

So you have to decide if you want to save money and buy a travel-friendly compact dryer or want a fully-functional curly-hair styling tool that saves electricity. If it’s the latter then TYMO is a good investment.

If not, well, better stick to Conair or Babyliss then.

Pros:

  • Diffuser attachment makes it perfect for styling curly hair
  • Multiple temperature settings that allow you to control the temperature
  • LCD screen display makes it easier to track the heat
  • 8ft long cord makes it easy to use the dryer
  • Cool shot button helps set hairstyle and prevent frizz

Cons:

  • Not very travel-friendly in size as it’s larger and comes with multiple attachments
  • Very expensive

My Ratings:

  • Wattage – 4.5/5
  • Hair Drying Power – 4.5/5
  • Functionality – 5/5
  • Price – 3/5

Andis 40250 1600-Watt High Performance ProStyle Hair Dryer

Wattage – 1600 W

800 watt hairdryer

So the Andis 40250 is a hair dryer that is sort of different from the rest. It’s not fancy at all and is simply a 1600W dryer doing its job.

When I used it the dryer worked really well. It created heavy blasts of hot air and could dry longer hair in no time at all.

It also felt lighter than either the Babyliss or Conair which was a huge plus for me.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have anything else to its name. There’s no ionic technology or multiple heat settings or cool air button. Which would have been fine if this hair dryer wasn’t twice as expensive as Conair.

I mean there’s no reason for it to be this highly-priced. So I didn’t find it to be economical.

best low wattage hair dryer for camping

Also the buttons started failing a few weeks after I had been using this dryer and if not for the 5-warranty I would have been really irritated.

Pros:

  • Slightly higher wattage makes it good for drying long thick hair
  • Very lightweight and compact in size making it travel-friendly

Cons:

  • No tourmaline ionic tech or any other features
  • A lot more wattage used than others in this list
  • The build falls apart easily

My Ratings:

  • Wattage – 3.5/5
  • Hair Drying Power – 4/5
  • Functionality – 4/5
  • Price – 4/5

How To Select The Best Low Wattage Hair Dryer – A Buying Guide

So you’ve decided to buy a low-wattage hair dryer. Here are some important tips and factors to consider before you make your decision.

Size –  A low wattage hair dryer is the traveler’s friend. And most of these products are also designed to be travel friendly. So why not pick a hair dryer that’s foldable, compact and fits right into your travel bag.

Consider Your Hair Needs – Wattage aside, a hair dryer is ultimately a heat styling tool, so you need to consider how it will impact your hair. Look for ionic technology if you have frizzy hair and go for dryers with diffuser nozzles if you have curly hair.

Also check if the dryer has a ceramic coating if you have damaged hair as ceramic prevents overheating. If you have thick hair, a titanium hair dryer would be best.

Dual Voltage – The wattage isn’t the only thing to consider while using a hair dryer in a different country or even state. Some places have a different voltage requirement too. So make sure your hair dryer is adaptable.

Length Of Your Hair – Don’t compromise efficiency for too low a wattage. If you have long or very thick hair and require extra power to dry hair quickly go for a wattage between 1500-1800 rather than 1000-1200W.

A low-watt hair dryer has many advantages – it can reduce electricity consumption, it works easily in any hotel room socket, and it doesn’t produce enough heat to damage hair.

So it’s a no-brainer that a lot of people consider this an essential hair styling tool.

I hope these reviews helped you select the right product for your requirements. Don’t forget to match the hair dryers to your hair types and textures.

The Babyliss Pro’s nano-titanium technology is great for frizzy hair while the diffuser attachment in TYMO makes it the ideal low-watt hair dryer for wavy and curly hair types.
