As a cosmetologist, I was simply in a dilemma because I so do not have the healthiest hair and I really needed to find a brand that I could trust with my haircare, a brand that has powerful damaged-hair friendly products that I could use and count on to restore the health of my hair.
So, I decided to do what I thought would be the best way out, on my search to finding the “best” brand – I began to do some research!
Yes, I got down to the basics, checking out all about a few brands and their ethics, their range of products, the type of ingredients they use, their pricing etc.
Now, to answer the most obvious question that may be on your minds right now – did it help me? Well, it did quite a bit and if you are doing a little research for yourself, I’ve got you covered!
Here are all the details about the two brands I liked the most – OGX and Herbal Essences.
OGX Vs Herbal Essences
At OGX, they ensure that none of their cosmetic products are tested on animals during their research and development and are committed to ensuring that their cosmetic products support the non-testing of animals methods in order to promote animal welfare.
But what I observed is that while their cosmetic products are animal-friendly, there is no information about their other products not being tested on animals.
This can mean that not all their products are cruelty-free. This could also be because certain products require animal testing by law.
They also aim at environmental sustainability and create products keeping in mind this aspect, in order to reduce the waste filling up in the landfills of the Earth.
At Herbal Essences, all their products are completely cruelty-free and are also recognized by PETA. None of their products or ingredients are tested on animals by them, by them or even by their suppliers.
They also aim at environmental sustainability and at making all their product packaging environmentally friendly.
OGX is often known for putting their main ingredient on the front of the bottle. They are most often made up of most natural ingredients like coconut milk, argan oil, tea tree oil, shea butter etc.
They do not include any ingredients that can cause damage to the hair like sulfated surfactants (like SLS, SLES etc), parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, plastic microbeads etc. They have also recently launched new products that contain no silicones or colorants.
Just like OGX, Herbal Essences too use plant-based ingredients and wish to keep away ingredients that are damaging to the hair (which they call the “no no no” ingredients) like parabens, gluten, sulfates, toluene, paraffins, colorants etc, in most of their products.
They use ingredients like argan oil, coconut, aloe vera, avocado, honey, white grapefruit, birch, jojoba oil, mint, jasmine flower extract etc.
Range of Products
If you check out the official website of OGX, you can see that they have a very wide range of products that cater to everyone.
For hair care they have products for all hair types and textures, to resolve all different types of hair problems like shampoos, conditioners, dry shampoos, hair masks, hairsprays, penetrating hair oils, hair mists, hair treatments etc.
They also have products for the body like lotions and body washes, along with moisturizing and exfoliating products for the skin.
Even at Herbal Essences, they have products with a wide range, but solely for hair care like shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, dry shampoo, hair oils, hair styling products etc.
The products at OGX and Herbal Essences are both relatively reasonably priced. The haircare products of both these brands start at around $5.99, if you purchase them on their official websites.
At OGX, the body care products start at $6.28 and the skin care products start at $5.74, falling in the reasonable category. All these product rates are subject to change.

OGX Coconut Milk Shampoo vs. Herbal Essences Argan Oil Shampoo
So I personally have tried products from both of these brands. I have tried the OGX Nourishing + Coconut Milk Moisturizing Shampoo and the Herbal Essences Repairing Argan Oil Shampoo.
These shampoos are specifically designed to help repair damaged hair and reduce dryness. So that’s why I chose them to try out, since my hair is quite damaged.
Both these shampoos worked as great hair cleansers and were gentle on my scalp. While the OGX Coconut Milk shampoo worked well and made my hair feel soft, smooth and well-moisturized.
The Herbal Essences Argan Oil Shampoo did not live up to my expectations. It did moisturize my hair but didn’t make it super soft.
The OGX shampoo was free from all types of harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens etc, but the Herbal Essences shampoo contained sulfates! Yes, this is something I didn’t like and I didn’t realize it until after a few uses.
That’s when I rechecked the website and realized that they make both types of shampoos, some sulfate-free and some with sulfates. But luckily, it didn’t do too much damage to my hair.
The OGX shampoo was a liquid shampoo and the Herbal Essences shampoo was also liquid, but oil-based. Both these shampoos were easy to use and also lathered well, so I have no complaints on this aspect.
These shampoos also had a great fragrance and made my hair smell fresh once it was washed and had dried up.
If I had to pick one of these shampoos again, I would choose the OGX shampoo because of its ingredients, as it was sulfate-free.
What are the similarities between both these brands?
· For haircare, both brands have products for all hair types and textures, to resolve many different types of hair problems.
· They have products that are made with natural-ingredients like plant oils, plant extracts etc.
· Both brands have many products that do not contain harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, etc.
· They aim at environmental sustainability.
What are some of the differences between OGX and Herbal Essences?
OGX does not specify about no animal cruelty when it comes to their haircare products.
Herbal Essences has a wide range of products, but solely for hair care. They have no products for body care and skin care.
Some of the Herbal Essences shampoos do contain sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate.
