From mineral buildup to product residue, dirt, grease, and grime, my scalp and hair has it all! I have tried several other clarifying shampoos in the past and it stripped my hair of its moisture so bad, that my hair became as dry as straw!
Yes, that’s when I just stopped using clarifying shampoos thereafter. My hair couldn’t take any more dryness than it already had experienced!

Main Ingredients and their Top Benefits: Ouai Detox Shampoo
The main ingredients of this product are mentioned below along with their benefits:
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a vitamin and nutrient-rich ingredient that has super powerful effects for the hair.
It is known to be a great scalp and hair exfoliator and is also known to be able to treat and prevent scalp conditions.
Since it helps exfoliate the scalp, it can indirectly promote hair growth as the hair follicles are unclogged and have space to breathe and take in the vitamins and nutrients from hair care products.
Using hydrolyzed keratin on the hair can help increase hair shine and smoothness. It can improve the condition of dry hair and reduce frizz to a considerable extent.
Hydrolyzed keratin can help rebuild the structure of the hair and reduce hair damage like breakage and split ends.
It can help increase hair elasticity and can also moisturize and coat the hair strands to prevent it from external damage.
Chelating ingredients are similar to clarifying ingredients but are known to be much milder than clarifying ingredients.
These chelating ingredients are added into shampoos in order to help get rid of any sort of buildup on the hair like product residue, dirt, grime, mineral buildup etc.
It is also known to be able to penetrate into the hair shaft and cleanse the hair from within, without stripping away the hair’s natural moisture. And hydration.
Testing This Shampoo
Here are some of the parameters I chose, to test and review this product:
Ability to cleanse the hair:
The main point of using this detox shampoo is for hair and scalp cleansing. So this parameter tests how effectively this product cleansed my hair and scalp of buildup, dirt, grime and grease.
Scalp and hair gentleness:
I always prefer using products that do not contain sulfates, parabens and any other harsh chemicals, so that they are gentle on my hair and sensitive scalp and do not cause irritation and dryness.
This aspect tests how gentle it felt on my scalp and hair and whether it caused any scalp irritation and dryness, or whether it caused any hair dryness.
This product offers the ultimate hair cleansing from residue, buildup, dirt and grease without stripping away the hair’s moisture.
So this parameter will test how effectively this product fulfilled its promised results.
I prefer shampoos with mild scents as harsh scents are not my cup of tea. Mild scents make the hair smell fresh once it dries.
So this parameter will test the strength of the fragrance of this shampoo, whether mild or harsh.
Colour-treated hair safety of use:
My hair has been colour treated for some years now, so I consider this aspect to test whether the shampoo damages and fades my hair colour or not.
My ideal price range for a shampoo of 300 ml would be between $6 to $12. So even though I bought this product which was out of my budget, I chose this parameter to review whether this shampoo was worth the price I paid or not.
Ouai Detox Shampoo: Overall Review
What my hair felt like before I used this shampoo?
Let me give you a gist of how my hair was before I used this shampoo on my hair. Well, first of all, I have wavy hair that has been through colour-treatments and heat treatments over the years and has become quite dry and damaged.
In addition to this, I’m a big user of hair care products like gels, pomades, serums, moisturizers, you name it and I’d have tried it, so yes, both my hair and scalp have a lot of product buildup, along with dirt, grease and grime due to my frequent exercising.
Also, I live in a place that has hard water, so my scalp and hair also have mineral buildup!
Yes, so undoubtedly I needed a thorough hair and scalp cleaning and that’s how I got down to trying this shampoo.
What my hair felt like after I used this shampoo?
So coming to my review, let me begin with telling you straight up that this is by far the best detox shampoo I have ever tried! I simply loved it and loved how well it worked on my hair.
I was super amazed to see how good the cleansing power of this shampoo was to have been able to get rid of my scalp buildup, dirt, grime, grease and also mineral residue which had coated my hair strands and scalp for years!
It also softened my dry hair and made my hair feel so smooth and it actually had a renewed hair shine. My wavy locs literally felt alive again and I couldn’t be happier with the results of this shampoo.
This shampoo rakes up a good lather (especially when diluted with a little water) and it makes it super easy to use and massage it into the hair and scalp.
It was super gentle on my scalp and hair and did not damage my hair at all, instead it moisturized it. Also, it didn’t damage my hair colour or even fade it at all. So that’s a plus for this product!
Coming to the fragrance of this product, it was supposed to smell like “melrose place”, which I honestly had no clue what that smell was about, but all I can tell you is that the smell was relatively mild, even though it could have been a little more subtle. But that’s totally negligible. It, either way, made my hair smell amazing once it dried.
Lastly, talking about the pricing, well, that’s the only “con” I have about this product. It is super expensive and it was way out of my budget.
But would I buy it again? Was it worth the $30 I paid? Well, I’m going to have to say yes, it was totally worth the extra bucks I paid!
I bought it off of Amazon, but only later realized that buying it from the official Ouai website would have made me pay lesser as they offer discounts. So make sure to check out the official Ouai website before buying this shampoo.

Ouai Detox Shampoo: FAQs
Is Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate a sulfate?
Well, it is quite normal for anyone to get confused with this ingredient because it sounds like it is a sulfate, but it actually is not!
This product does not contain any sulfates! This ingredient is often used in detox or clarifying shampoos because it’s a powerful cleansing agent (which actually replaces a sulfate), that is made from coconuts.
Therefore, using a product with sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate is absolutely safe.
Can I use the Ouai Detox Shampoo just as often as any other cleansing shampoo?
Since the Ouai Detox Shampoo is made on the basis of a clarifying shampoo, it is meant to deeply clarify the hair.
Therefore, it cannot be used as often as any other cleansing/regular shampoo, even though it is safer than any other clarifying shampoo.
You could use the Ouai Detox Shampoo once every week or once every two to three hair washes.
Overall, this shampoo is the best choice for hair that has been heavy with hair products and chemicals. It acts as a quick detox to remove all toxins and leave your hair feeling strong and healthy.
All you need to do is wash your hair with regular shampoo after applying it, but don’t forget to use conditioner as well.
