Selsun Blue Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo Review

As a cosmetologist, I did my own research and found a shampoo with good reviews, high ratings and saw the promising results in the Selsun Blue Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo with Menthol.

Well, I tried it out and the results were super amazing! This medicated shampoo is formulated specifically for dandruff reduction with its active ingredient selenium sulfide (1%), which is a powerful anti-dandruff ingredient.

I have been using this shampoo for over six months now and I can actually see the results! This shampoo worked as a life saver for me, so here I am giving you guys my review!

To begin with, I’ll give you a little background of the problem I had. So, I faced dandruff and flaking, along with scalp itchiness. Hence, using this shampoo to treat these issues was my target and did it work? Yes, it for sure did!

Even though this shampoo does contain many types of chemicals as its inactive ingredients to make the shampoo formulation strong enough to get rid of the dandruff buildup

Also the shampoo is great at treating the dandruff and flaking and bringing itchiness under control. But what I liked most is that it is super soothing on the scalp and hair and gives the scalp a very cooling effect.

It is a good and powerful cleansing shampoo as it did help get rid of a considerable amount of dandruff flakes over just a few washes.

This product is highly effective in terms of dandruff reduction and itching control, as it worked like a charm and I actually saw results within two weeks of using it.

selsun anti-dandruff shampoo reviews

I wash my hair thrice a week, so I initially started using it two times every week (while the other one time in between I used my regular cleansing shampoo).

After around a month and a half, I noticed that my dandruff had reduced to a great extent and the itching had stopped completely.

So that’s when I reduced using this shampoo to just once a week, for the purpose of maintenance.

The texture of this shampoo is liquidy and is very smooth (does not contain microbeads etc). When used on wet hair, it lathers very well and is super easy to use. It is also unscented and that’s something I really liked.

I paid $ 6.98 for this 325 ml (11 Fl.oz.) bottle of shampoo that I bought on Amazon. I really felt like it was reasonably priced and totally worth every single penny I paid!

Selenium Sulphide (Selenium Sulfide)

Selenium sulphide is a very popular ingredient because it is one of the most common ingredients found in anti-dandruff products. This is an antifungal agent that effectively helps in relieving itching, flaking, scaling and dry scalp.

This compound is also known as an anti-infective since it works by slowing the growth of the infection-causing yeast. This ingredient is found mostly in anti-dandruff lotions, shampoos and other treatments.

Water in most hair care products (and other cosmetics) is the chief component of the formula as it’s the solvent which dissolves all the other ingredients.

The water used in hair care products is sterile and deionized. This means there are no minerals in this water as they can interfere with the other ingredients.

Water-based hair products, especially conditioners are lighter, spread easily and help hydrate your hair if there are humectants (like glycerin, etc.) present in the formula.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Cocamidopropyl Betaine or CAPB is a type of cleanser that is derived from coconut oil.

It’s often used in shampoos in place of harsh surfactants like Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Both of which can strip hair dye, remove moisture and irritate scalp skin.

CAPB however is milder and gentler and even has moisturizing properties.

Most sulfate-free shampoos do not lather well or clean hair very thoroughly but as the shampoo contains this natural cleanser, it’s very good for removing grease and dirt from deep within your scalp without stripping it of moisture.

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate is a cleansing agent that removes dirt, oil and debris from scalp by creating foam and lather.

It is super powerful and also has the ability to strip moisture and hair dye from the tresses. Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate can also be irritating on the skin.

Menthol

Menthol is a chemical compound that is found in the leaves and oils of corn mint, peppermint, and other species of mint plants.

It can also be created in a lab and usually appears in the form of crystals.

Menthol can increase hair growth by stimulating the hair follicles on your scalp. This ingredient also helps in reducing dandruff, controlling excess oil production on hair, and removing scalp buildup.

It also leaves a  cool, refreshing sensation on the scalp.

DMDM Hydantoin

This ingredient is a common preservative used in shampoos because of its fantastic antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. It prevents yeast, fungi, bacteria, etc. from growing in shampoos, especially considering most products are placed in a warm, moist environment in your showers.

However, recent studies have shown that DMDM Hydantoin releases formaldehyde which is known to cause severe allergic reactions and even lead to cancer in certain cases. (N. Latorre, J.F. Silvestre, A.F. Monteagudo, Allergic Contact Dermatitis Caused by Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Releasers, Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas (English Edition), Volume 102, Issue 2, 2011, Pages 86-97, ISSN 1578-2190)

A lot of shampoo and cosmetic brands have recalled products that contain DMDM Hydantoin.

However, some studies claim that this preservative is only harmful if its quantity exceeds 0.074 percent which according to certain manufacturers it doesn’t.

How to use the Selsun medicated dandruff shampoo?

This shampoo is a medicated shampoo that should be used for the purpose of dandruff reduction and to soothe scalp itchiness. So the product bottle advises its use up to twice a week.

If you are someone with a sensitive scalp or have any other severe scalp conditions, I’d recommend consulting a doctor before using this shampoo.

To use, you will need to wet your scalp and hair properly with water and then apply this shampoo (make sure to shake the bottle well, before using it) all over your scalp and hair evenly.

Then, using your fingertips, gently massage it in and I’d suggest leaving it on for a couple of minutes for the best effects of this shampoo.

Lastly, rinse off with plain water. (I personally do not condition my hair once I have used this shampoo).

Caution:

  • In case the dandruff and itchiness gets worse after use, stop its use completely and immediately consult a doctor.
  • Do not get it in contact with the eyes. If there is contact, do not rub the eyes, just rinse off thoroughly with plain water.
  • Keep away from children’s reach
