For those of you who have been using OGX shampoos over the years and are rather shocked and surprised to read the topic of discussion, well, here’s what you need to know about the OGX shampoo lawsuit.

There was a lawsuit that claimed that Johnson and Johnson’s brand OGX’s shampoos and also their conditioners contained an ingredient called DMDM hydantoin, that lead to/was linked to hair loss.

So first of all, let me tell you what DMDM hydantoin is, for those of you who do not know. This ingredient is a preservative ingredient that is used to not just preserve shampoos and conditioners, but to also prevent them from microorganism formation.

But this ingredient when added into shampoos and conditioners is known to release some amount of formaldehyde (a chemical) that can cause other side effects to the user like contact dermatitis, allergies, cancer (as it’s a carcinogen), eyes, throat and nose irritation etc.

This ingredient is also known to cause hair damage and eventually can lead to hair fall.

Johnson and Johnson’s response to the lawsuit

Johnson and Johnson claimed that some of their existing products contained DMDM hydantoin because it was used as a preservative, in order to prevent mold formation (while the product was kept in the bathroom). This was a statement sent to Prevention.

They also stated that they do not continue to launch any new products that contain the ingredient DMDM hydantoin and have stopped making such products over the last several years.

Johnson and Johnson made an announcement in 2012, in The New York Times, in the article ‘Johnson and Johnson to Remove Formaldehyde from Products’, that their products will no longer contain DMDM hydantoin by the year 2015.

As per the opinions of experts, they say that even if OGX shampoos did contain the ingredient DMDM hydantoin and that released some amount of formaldehyde, the levels found in shampoos and conditioners is rather negligible and is not likely to cause any excessive hair loss.
